Collie Buddz X Mr Vegas - Mus Come a Hustle

VS.

Now I didnt go ahead and make the ultimate track happen, I will leave that up to you. What I did do was go ahead and put some mixable intros and outros of these evvy evvy chunes. They are both on the same riddim and were mega summer hits. I should have done this sooner, but take it or leave it.

2008 in a NUTSHELL

This year is almost done and there has been a lot that went down. We are getting out of one of the worst presidencies ever. We have a black president elect(wow). The country is in a recession. People don't know how to dance anymore. Music is so backwards right now. I am no longer vegan. I started school! I finally might be going to Japan (technically 09, but made it happen in 08)!!!

Stuff to look forward to in 2009

Japan, becoming vegan again, sxsw 2009, west coast/ canadian tour, new mix cds, getting to be that dude....

I am sure there is more, but lets just let it come to be naturally. Over and out.

Aether - Artifacts

My homeboy from San Antonio (hometown baby baby) just released his first solo album on Exponential and its been climbing up the itunes charts and making people say good things. The record is really fresh and sounds like a mix between newer Flying Lotus/ Alias/ and some Massive Attack moodiness. I hate doing the old comparison thing, but people don't pay attention otherwise (thanks pitchfork). Here is my favorite track off the record for you to grab courtesy of label head, Ernest Gonzales.

If you are interested in picking up more stuff from the label, go over to Exponential's site. They have been really making some quality chunes over the last few years for those that are into electronic music ala Boards of Canada, Low End Theory, Southern Crunk, and anything else in between.

ZACK ATTACK

My dude Four Color Zack, one of Darko's top three favorite djs, sent over a new mix this afternoon. Apparently, I have been sleeping on The Dream, no pun intended, but if Zack makes a mix of nothing but dudes music, then I gots to believe in it.

Zack is one of the best dudes to hang with and by far one of the best djs I have seen in a very long time. You can grab this mix here and if you did not get his "live from home", you can grab from our fullyfitted blog.

MR. OIZO - IT TAKES TWO (prince klassen edit)

I have been a fan of Mr. Oizo for some time now and have loved most everything he has done, though that last full length was kind of way the f*ck out there. He turned his focus back on to the dance floor for his newest, Lambs Anger, which is a solid record. When I first heard it, there were a few tracks that really stood out. It Takes Two is a weird amalgam of the Rob Base classic and some clever word play from Carmen Castro. Here is my edit that I made for a little more dj friendly action.

GIANT ROBOT ISSUE 57

Yo everyone, I hope all of your time away from school is being taken advantage of and if you are still in and just about to take finals, godspeed. Anyway, I just wanted to brag a little, mostly because this is something I am very excited about. I recently found out that my mix CD, Mi Fresh, is in the new issue of Giant Robot. The issue just dropped, so go grab it from your favorite news stand as soon as you can! Also, the GR team put up their new podcast for the issue as well. You can grab that underneath the cover below.

Sunny Ozuna at The Continental

It has been awhile since I have posted. Now that school is over for the semester, I can squeeze in more time and attention to the blog. Anyway, Mc and I went to catch a San Antonio legend last Saturday at The Contintental Club, Mr. Sunny Ozuna. Sunny was one of the key figures in creating the San Antonio "West Side sound". Starting in the late 50's and going into the 60's and early 70's, San Antonio had a huge Chicano Soul movement. The influences were that of the north east. With it's doo-wop, ballad, and Motown sensibilities, the regional sound of tejano and conjunto was what set it apart.

Here you can see Sunny and his band the Sunliners on an LP release.

Here you can see Sunny at the Continental Club Sat Dec 6th 2008.

I was excited to see Sunny perform, as my mother used to see him back in the day when she was a little younger than I am now. He ripped through Motown standards, originals, and threw in a flavor of tejano for the gringos. It felt right to be there. There were pachucos and cruisers there, which I bet was a weird site to see for Sunny. Flashback central!

If you are at all interested in the Chicano Soul Movement, you should seek out Ruben Molina's "Chicano Soul: Recording and History of American Culture". The book was recently published and is an amazing look into a forgotten movement that is just not getting the proper acknowledgment.

MK 12 DOES LOCO MOTION

Mc and I finally got to catch a look at the new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, last Tuesday. I was immediately put into a good mood when I saw that one of my favorite design groups was in charge of the motion graphics for the intro credit sequence. On a side note, I was then taken off my "high" when I realized that Jack White had anything to do with the theme music, again, just a side note. I got introduced to MK 12 in 2002 when my old posse and I were focusing on multimedia projects. Their use of motion that incorporated still images, video, and off the wall ideas was so new and refreshing and I am glad to see that they are still on top of the field. I didnt think I would have anything to show you, but thanks to the wonders of youtube and the blatant Jack Sparrow piracy that most people have come to adopt in their lives, we have a clip...

If you go to their website, you can see shorts that they have produced as well as other projects past, present, and future. My favorite "in house" film they made involved a ninja accompanied by the best song ever, if you look at that film from 2002, you will see a lot similar ideas used in the Bond intro. I dont think that means their work is tired, I think that it means they were so next level, everyone is finally catching up.

Wes Coats get double fisted in da middow

My good friend, Scotty Coats of Ubiquity Records and, more recently, Rong Music along with Wes the Mes, have just released a new 12 inch on the Rong/DFA imprint. The chune is called "Double Fisted" and you can scoop it from The Lab. Coats is a true disco head and is constantly snubbing any attempt at me showing him "something new I found". He is an awesome dude and is really making music fresh again. Their Free Blood remix has gained a ton of attention for them and this new single should do no different. They were recently interviewed by the L.A. Record to talk about their process and, what seems like, anything else they wanted to talk about.

SERATO ROLL UPDATE

I asked about this awhile back and have since installed the upgrade and done the correct protocol for making this function active. While I was playing with it and showing it to some of my friends I did learn a neat trick that I have not seen anyone post about yet, which is how to keep the function active even after you quit and restart.

Here is the trick I am talking about...

So what I did was instead of having to make the new crate constantly, I thought about changing the name of an already existing crate just to see what happens. So I made a new crate called "we gettin arab money" and threw a few evvy chunes in it (dont know if that is necessary, but did it either way) I then renamed the crate to the "proper" name that enables the function and voi effing la... it stayed. Have fun.

oh yeah and if you got an extra hand or mutant hands like the young curtstradamus, there is a way to shorten and lengthen the roll joints too...

COOKING MAMA: MAMA KILLS ANIMALS

Well Peta is at it again, this time targeting the very popular "Cooking Mama" that is for The Nintendo DS. The game allows the young ones to make recipes and learn how to cook using the character, Mama, in her kitchen. The game has spawned many other copies and sequels, but this one takes cheese... err, soy cheese, I should say.

GLORIA JONES - TAINTED LOVE (prince klassen intro outro edit)

I just made this quick edit for a little extended pleasure of this sweet sweet chune. I was almost tempted to make a 3 minute loop of the intro... that might just happen. Disregard Marc Almond and his "partner" coming out ol girl's hair, that did not really happen, it was photoshopped.

Minority Report just turned MAJOR

Thanks to Oblong Industries, we are now able to take virtual control of practically anything and do our best Tom Cruise, post Days of Thunder, gestures and work at the same time. Watching this video, you will instantly be thrown back to the, then inventive, but far fetched, user interface that old Scientology himself used in the film, Minority Report. They call it G-Speak and it is almost an exact replication of the same U.I. from the film. side note Apparently one of Spielberg's science advisors helped in the creation of. I am sure this is years away from having any sort of home use, but the idea that is was actually produced is amazing and very scary.

I think my friend was correct in saying, "We are officially in the future. In most films with a future time period setting, there is either a woman president or a black president..." well, I think we all know where I am going with this. Enjoy!

SH*T RAPPERS NEED TO GET OVER

1) Skinny Jeans
I mean, we all know that rappers talk about some dumb shit all the time. The thing I just dont get is the concern for what other people are looking like. Why do they seek to alienate potential sales? Just like the stuff they are rapping about, stuff they are concerned with is just plain ignorant. Afterall, dont they realize they wouldnt be working if skinny jeans never existed?

Most rappers were not wearing what they are now wearing, three years ago. Examples, True Religion (gross), Evisu (ehh), A Bathing Ape (aka Bapes and prolly fakes), Nike Air Force 1s (classic design, still tired though).

When did rapping become pro wrestling?

I wear fitted jeans, not really skinny, but can be perceived as so. I am not offended by what rappers are saying, I am just saying... who the fuck cares?

More to come in my on going coverage of Sh*t Rappers Need to Get Over...

BIG TUCK - NOT A STAIN ON ME (PRINCE KLASSEN INTRO EDIT)

I made this edit a few weeks ago and forgot to put it up for download. Simple mixable edit that lets you mix it in, instead of having to drop it in. I didnt put an outro on it mostly due to not ever getting to end of the track (its rare that happens anymore), so just giving you a nice warning. I like the end either way, gives good closure.

WILD COMBINATION: a portrait of Arthur Russell

Matt Wolf has been working diligently on this film for the last half a decade or a so and it is finally paying off. The documentary is set for retail release this November, thanks to Plexifilm, and is still making the rounds in independent theatres across the globe.

I emailed Matt to try and set up a screening about a year ago and was told that there was definitely going to be a screening at some point in Austin and to keep looking on the website, arthurrussellmovie.com, for more details.

The day has finally arrived. Tomorrow at the Alamo Ritz, there will be a screening of the film for the music mondays series at 930. I would suggest getting there early to get a seat.

If you dont get to the screening, End of an Ear will have the dvd for sale in a couple of weeks.

UPDATE
The film was great as expected. The interview footage with Arthur's parents was so charming and touching, my eyes were watery at some points.
Just knowing that Russell was a work-a-holic and he recorded so much material makes me extremely happy and I hope that Audika and any other label continues to release it all. The spotlight he desperately seeked is now forever shining on him.

MIX FOR CLOUDPLUM.BLOGSPOT.COM

Fall is here...in Texas too, which is really weird. I can't remember the last time it was actually cold or cool this time of year in Texas. I kind of don't know what to do with myself, I feel like I should still be wearing tee shirts and sweating for days.

With the official announcement of the fall season, it seems like my tastes change every year. Music, fashion, food, activities, they all get a face lift.

Here is an exclusive mix I did for Cloud Plum and its followers. This is all music that influences me and also reminds me of the Fall. So PMP friendly...

3-2-1 KLASSY

You would think that from watching all of these science and math shows, I would have a PHd by now. I could not get enough of 3-2-1 Contact, Mr. Wizard, Newton's Apple, and a little later in life, Bill Nye the Science Guy. Watching these intros shows exactly why you could get so wrapped up in these programs.

I was just one year old when this video was shot, but I just have to say that things will not be the same ever again. Being a child of the 80's, I know all about ninjas, skateboards, and video games... this video almost incorporates all three of them. Cmon, a japanese freestyle skate demo from a young Rodney Mullen? Those kids have been on it since the beginning.

Cinelli x RVCA x Mellow Johnny's

For those that came out last week, you know that the turn out was great and the art was amazing. For those that didn't get to make, you crazy for that one! The fact that Lance Armstrong owns a 400% Kaws stand up and had it on display was reason enough for the show, but I guess the fact that Cinelli gave frames to some of the best artists in modern times to re-interpret them doesn't hurt.

Here are the pics for those that won't be able to make it out before the show ends, sorry for the blurred out shots. I took them right before I was about to start djing.

I had the very fortunate opportunity to play at Ray Noland's Got Next opening this past week. Chicken George and myself were the music for the night and the art was top notch. There were pieces from Noland, Shepard Fairey, and HVW8 to name a few. I did not get my hands on one of the screened posters for the events, but I did get some decent pictures of the night. Thanks to Ty from HVW8 for hooking me on this one.

James Chance and the Contortions

I knew it was going to be a good trip the minute I landed in New York. I turned my phone off from plane mode and got the message that I did not think would ever happen in my life. My good friend and producer extraordinaire, XXXchange of Spank Rock fame sent me a message that read, "James Chance and the Contortions are playing at Ps one, wanna come?" I immediately made the move for cab that second and got to catch about 20 minutes of their set. Needless to say this was probably a once in a lifetime event for me and I could not have said no. Unfortunately, the cooler than cool crowd just did not know the deal and were not paying attention, but that did not change the thrill that I was getting to see James Chance.

I got some decent photos and video that I will add when I get back home. Until then, here is a new song from the legend that is being produced by members of Liquid Liquid.

The System - Youre in My System

I can't believe that there was a video for this song and I double can't believe that I never knew about it. Let me tell my history with this tune. I first heard this song about 10 or so years ago on San Antonio local community college station, KSYM. There was a house mix show every Saturday night, House Nation, put on by my good friend, but at the time mentor, Leo "Dj Rise" Trujillo. It was a house version of this song that was so deep and still one of my all time favorite house cuts to date. I called in every week requesting certain things and asking for track names just so I can have those same records that Rise was playing. Such a huge figure in what made me me today. Years down the line I get into electro funk and 80s r&b, needless to say this song came back into my life. Chromeo eat your heart out, I know you know the deal... but please tell the kids what to listen to.

Droppin Science

Greg Wilson is one person to aspire to be. My man has over 30 years of djing and record collecting under his belt and he is not stopping any time soon. Known heavily in the Funk Jazz scene in England he stirred things up a bit by introducing a new type of music that was being deemed soulless by die hards and fan boys alike, Electro Funk. The music was dismissed immediately by most, but it took Greg Wilson to spoon feed it to his long time friends and fans for them to understand. Heavily influenced by the sounds of experimental New York musicians in the 80s, he took his cue and never looked back. I would personally like to thank Mr. Wilson for globalizing one of my biggest influences in life.

Give credit...

Nick Catchdubs in Full Effect

Catch sent me over an email the other day with news about his newest projects that he wanted to share. They are both new mixtapes that he compiled and produced and from the looks of things, they are good summer listens and future classics. "Slick" is a a true dj mix of his current favorite tunes new and old. "Kizzaland" on the other hand is another dope mixtape project done with Timbaland's new signee, Izza Kizza. We all should remember Nick giving the masses an introduction to Wale on the infamous "100 Miles & Running" tape. Though still fresh in our minds as well as still in rotation in my car and the office, this new mix with Izza is definitely on some far out steez... but still ill as f*ck.

Nick, as you know, recently left his associate editor position at Fader Magazine to work full time on start up label of the moment, Fools Gold, with friend and Kanye West's dj, A Trak. Peep their blog and see what kind of weird sh*t dudes are talking about and always be on the look out for upcoming releases, highly recommended.
We Make It Good mix series

I am a huge fan of dj mixes and mixtapes in general. We all know the routine of putting one together for a friend, or even better, a new girl or guy that you have interest in, but don't know how to tell them. There have been books, books, and more books about the subject. Magazines, movie references, and neighborhood record store talk about it all. Those these tapes or mixes might not mean as much as lets say, your first crush tape. They do however keep me interested in what people are playing and what influences them as Djs. Clayton "pretty titty" Vomero of Seattle's Sing Sing party has been curating the series known as We Make It Good. There are four in the series thus far and the newest is another sure shot from my main man behind the beats of Spank Rock, Fully Fitted, and countless other remixes, Alex "the armani" XXXchange.

Santogold feat MIA - Get it Up (prince klassen young professional edit)

I was about to go to bed and I realized that I had not finished what I set out to do today. I got my computer out and made a new edit for all the homies out there.

As you know Santogold aka Ms Santi White if you are nasty is one of my favorite artists of the last few years and I try to keep her in my playlists as much as possible. She just dropped her brand spanking new mixtape off at TTL recently and so far from what I hear it sounds pretty nice. I think she and I share a common interest in what New York used to be, a time where punk kids would hang with the then new hip hop kids and you would see a 60 year old art collector hanging with a rastafari dread brother and have no second thoughts about it.

She has unfortunately been thrown the old pitchfork style (compare to something anyone can grasp to) reviews left and right, saying that she is either the new MIA or she is blatantly ripping her off. I am not sure what the people are reading or hearing (other than their pretentious snobbery), but I would have to say that Santi's album sounds nothing like MIA. I can understand sonic references and the fact that they both roll with the same posse and are females, but I think the comparisons can stop there.

Either way, here is indeed a track with both MIA and Santogold on it from Santi's hot off the press mix. I took the liberty to take out the Gorilla Zoe acapella mostly because it didnt make any sense to me. Enjoy

Jamie Lidell - Figured me Out (prince klassen young professional edit)

I have loved this song since I got the promo of Mr Lidell's newest album, Jim, a few months ago. He further solidified himself as a true "blue eyed soul" type on this record and even took the initiative to go for my favorite era of R&B, the early 80s. I was really wanting to do a more dj friendly edit of it and this is the end result. Not much to it other than I added an intro/outro, some effects, and a few edits throughout. The track is so gorgeously done it was hard for me to cut out anything from it, so I kept most if intact. Simple and effective.

Dj Star Eyes gave me some twinkle

Mike 2600 told Ms Star Eyes to holler at me about playing down here. Luckily I had enough time to set something up amidst the chaos that this week had already become. She said she would be down here resting and relaxing with a girlfriend of hers and want to see if I can put her on... well, I did and I am glad I did. Bird had just played with her in Minneapolis a few weeks ago at Mike 2600's new addition to the MN nightlife, DO IT TO IT. I had heard nothing but good things about homegirl, her taste, and skills... they were all true. She was on it! Working the knobs, running through tracks, and getting the crowd hype. You can catch her with the rest of her crew, Trouble & Bass in NYC or read her contributions in XLR8R every month.

SMALLTOWN DJS, not so small

I met Pete about two years ago when he was down for the uber white fest we like to call, Austin City Limits festival. Our good friend, Dj Mel, had booked him for an after party that I was supposed to play at as well and well I didnt make it cause of... lets say "stomach cramps". We stayed in touch ever since and now I can call dude a really good friend and homie. If you have ever been able to catch a Smalltown set, I highly recommend it. I have never seen a dj duo play off of each other so well! Both Mikey and Pete share an amazing taste in music and are the downright funniest guys to hang out with. I challenged them to a game of Double Dribble, so stay tuned for the youtube video. I can also happily say that Smalltown had a major part in connecting me and my special someone. If there is ever a wedding, you know who the djs will be!!!

1. Tell us who you are. Names, where you from, background stuff.

Pete Emes & Mike Grimes - both from Calgary, Canada

2. How long have you two been working under the name Smalltown Djs? Where did that come from?

Smalltown started in 2000 - when we did our first mixtape. It was called Emes & Grimes are Smalltown DJs. It's a reference to the fact that despite being a city of over a million - our scene was still real small town back then. As well as the fact that compared to the real big cities of the world - Calgary was and still is a small town.

3. I know whenever we get to kick it, you guys seem to be really close friends. You guys have any funny stories or fights that you can tell us about?

We have too many stories - one of my favorites is when Grimes had to come out from behind the decks to bounce two unruly dudes at once. He had them both by the scruff of the neck at the same time! They were terrified. But we're just out to consistently have the best time possible.

4. Tell us about Canada and how things are going for you guys.

Canada is great - we have alot going on right now. We have a bunch of fun festival gigs this summer. And we're throwing a bunch of parties that we are real excited about, as well as some fun sudio projects. This fall we are doing a European tour. So that should be outrageous. We just wrapped up our Vegas residency - we were there every Friday for 9 months, and that took alot out of us so we're stoked to be back to reality.

5. Are you working on any new projects right now?

Yeah we have some production stuff under way with Wax Romeo (called Smalltown Romeo) - and a new CD called "Th Road Trip Mix" which we just finishing.

6. I know you have released vinyl in the past. I was wondering if you were planning on doing anything like that again. Do you think that vinyl is a dying format thanks to digital releases and heavy internet influence?

Our first vinyl record came out in 2003 - and we are still doing it. Although I think that the role of vinyl has changed. It used to be the best way to get your music into the clubs. Now that is not the case. So you just have to adapt. And vinyl has become more of a novelty to be honest. I think labels like Ed Banger have the right idea when promoting their records - with picture sleeves of So-Me's artwork etc. Although I still have my record collection, and can't see myself selling it - vinyl sales are definitely not what they once were.

7. What are some influences that got you where you are?

Well my dad was always a huge music fan - so it's in my blood. As far as artists go early on for me it was Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane and the Beastie Boys. The Beasties hit home because as a white kid from Canada I would never have thought I could be a dj until they came along. But we are both so heavily into music that we find new influences every day - and that's what inspires you to create.

8. Top five tracks right now?

in no order
Blind - Hercules & Love Affair
Don't Touch Me - Busta Rhymes
Mars - Fake Blood
Les Artistes (XXXchange Mix) - Santogold
Hi Hater - Maino

9. Last, feel free to talk any shit or send shout outs or whatever right
here.

Thanks so much for having us on here.

Oh yeah, I challenged Dj Sega to a game of Double Dribble on my old Nintendo. I am sending the invitation to you both. BRING IT!

You're dead. But can we play Blades of Steel?

SUCKER DUCKS: MAKE IT RAIN EDITION

yo so here is the new digs I have been fiending over as of late. Its been a long time, but there are a few new things to share with people. I have been really busy with dj and promotion stuff as of late and its been a fun time indeed. shout out to my girl all the way in berlin right now, I cant wait for her to back... and she better buy me something from top shop.

MUSIC....

First off, I just wrapped up the Red Bull Music Academy application drive in the Texas area with my homegirl Danielle and this year was a really good one for sure. We got a lot of talent coming out of the wood work from Austin and Texas in general. One of the guys that I really took notice of was my man that goes by the name of Icky Woodz. Its been hard for me to listen to most things Hip Hop as of late, other than some classics, but this dude really impressed me. The thing about what he is doing is the use of samples as well as doing it on FRUITY LOOPS!!! bananas. My motto has always been "work with what you have", and dude is working it. Add him on myspace and make sure to listen to his tunes.

Someone else that I have been in contact with as of late and really feeling what he is doing is Stones Throw Records newest artist, Dam Funk (pronounced Daym). My man is equal parts Roger & Zapp, and J Dilla as he is Change. Smoothed out brother that knows the deal with boogie and soul. He holds down a Monday night in LA called FUNKMOSPHERE, that is just the antithesis that LA has become. Soul, Boogie, and Disco for the grown and sexy type. You can read about him and some of his favorite tracks in the newest issue (no 28!!! way to go WP) of Wax Poetics Magazine

FILM...

I dont know if anyone got to see this in the theatres, but boy was it at the same time beautiful and amazingly horrid.

Manufactured Landscapes

I wrote about the documentary in a past Sucker Ducks right after I watched the film that nearly made me really lose my shit. The film follows a photographer that portrays some of the worst waste filled areas of the world and shows the "beauty" that devastation we as humans have aleady made. It is available to buy now at your LOCAL video store.

Up the Yangtze

This new film touches on the one of the subjects of "Landscapes" and demonstrates a new twist of emotion. I hope that Austin finds a theatre that will house this fine looking film.

LITERATURE...

Speaking of the devastation of the world, I must say that the marketing geniuses in the mass market industry are really making headway with the making of everything "green". I didnt know that my soy milk was being produced in a Eco friendly way, now I do! I am glad that I bought it while shopping with my trusty canvas tote. In all seriousness, I am glad that people are becoming aware of their footprint on the planet. With that said, just buying a tote bag and recycled snickers bars does not mean you are helping in any way.

This is a good source of what, where, why and any other question you can think of relating to the subject. I bought this at the recently opened new Austin location of a Houston based store, Domy.

my man, Russell has since moved from Houston (though the Houston store is STILL open) and headed towards the Texas capital to open his new venture. I cant talk more highly about this store and I am glad that someone has finally got the right idea of really bringing something good to the currently gentrific east side. He will be having the official grand opening this coming Friday June 6th from 6-9.

FUN...

I have been into gadgets since I was a young man, and the fascination with them still holds strong on my radar screen. I bought a Sony PSP probably about a year or so ago and wasnt too amazed with it. It looks good, but the games were kind of "ehh".

I then bought a Nintendo DS and my life has changed ever since. Not only are the normal games great, but they also offer instructional interactive games where you can learn spanish and french or test your I.Q. or even raise a puppy. Most people know that I am a huge fan of Japanese culture and Nintendo has really done it again. I came across this online recently and was just amazed.

Now if only Apple could take the stick out of their behind and really let people build some amazing programs for the iphone.

FOOD...

Banh Mi is always in my radar. Tell me where you find it and I will be there the next day.
